How to read a result

A result opens with one of three headlines:

Each match shows the mark (or "Figurative mark" where it has no words), the register and its number, linked to the office's own record, its current status, the Nice classes it covers and its filing date. The badge says how it matched: exact (the same words, or an applicant whose name is yours), phonetic (sounds the same) or fuzzy (spelt nearly the same). Live marks come first; expired, withdrawn and refused marks are listed separately as inactive.

A match is a mark worth reading, not a finding that you cannot use your name. Whether an earlier mark stands in your way depends on how similar the marks are, the goods and services each covers, and facts the register does not hold. The check does not weigh any of that, and it shows the 20 closest matches only.

What a clear result means, and what it does not

"No conflicts found" means no mark on the UK, EU or US register matched the name you typed, exactly, by sound or by spelling, on the day you searched. It does not mean the name is free to use or to register. The check does not cover:

Which trade mark registers does the check search?

The free check searches all three registers TMGuard monitors: UK IPO (3.98M marks since 1876, updated daily via direct SFTP access), EUIPO (3.23M EU trade marks including 446,888 Madrid designations, updated daily via production API), and USPTO (14.05M US trade marks since 1875, polled daily via the USPTO TMOG REST API, which publishes weekly gazettes, with TSDR for targeted serial-number lookups). Combined coverage is 21.26M trade marks. Alongside the registers, the check also cross-references Companies House for companies trading under a similar name and checks .co.uk, .com, .uk and .eu domain availability via the GoDaddy API.

What does a result show?
